A 90-minute comprehensive psychiatric assessment is an in-depth evaluation conducted by a psychiatrist to assess an individual's mental health. The goal is to gather detailed information about the patient’s psychiatric history, current symptoms, and overall mental well-being. Key components of the assessment typically include:
Clinical Interview: The psychiatrist asks about the patient's psychiatric history, including any prior diagnoses, treatments, and hospitalizations. They explore family psychiatric history, medical history, and social background (e.g., relationships, occupation, substance use).
Symptom Review: A thorough review of current symptoms related to mood, anxiety, thought patterns, sleep, appetite, concentration, and energy levels. This helps identify issues like depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, etc.
Mental Status Examination (MSE): An assessment of the patient's cognitive functions, mood, behavior, thought process, and overall mental state. This includes observations of speech, thought content (e.g., delusions or hallucinations), orientation (e.g., time, place), memory, and judgment.
Diagnostic Clarification: Based on the information collected, the psychiatrist may provide or refine a diagnosis using standardized criteria like the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
Treatment Planning: Discussion of potential treatment options, including medication, psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, and referrals to other mental health professionals if needed.
Risk Assessment: Evaluation of any risks of self-harm, harm to others, or neglect, particularly in patients with severe psychiatric symptoms or a history of suicidality.
